Steinchisma

Steinchisma is a segregate genus from Panicum, the small spikelets differing from Panicum by having 1 or 2 indurate (hard, thick) paleas, these when mature causing the spikelet to open like the open beak of a bird.

The Steinchisma species in our area are (inflorescence symmetrical and pyramidal) and (inflorescence irregular).

Steinchisma species are keyed with Panicum.
