Cyperus alopecuroides Rottb.
Distribution: This widespread tropical weed is spotty in Florida and in the Caribbean. Although not known to us so far in our counties, the species has been encountered nearby, and its appearance here will be no surprise. This is a weed on the move. Although native to the Old World Tropics, the sedge has been in the Caribbean for several years: (Rogers, G. & B. McClain. 1998. The sedges (Cyperaceae) of Barbados. Rhodora 100:389.)
Habitat: Open wet areas
Florida status: Invasive weed
Recognition: Large. This is our only Cyperus with 2 (vs. 3) stigmas combined with the spikelets crowded into cylindric clusters.
