Steinchisma hians (Elliott) Nash

Synonym: Panicum hians

Natural range: Southern U.S. to Argentina

Habitat: Shores, marshes, ponds

Florida status: Native, common

Recognition: A delicate, modest "Panicum" with the spikelets characteristically gaping (open-mouthed) due to large, thickened upper palea. See also Steinchisma laxa, which has a pyramidal inflorescence with horizontal branches. In this project, Steinchisma is keyed with Panicum.
