Recognition: Similar to S. scoparium but differing by having sometimes (not always) pubescent glumes on the sessile spikelet (vs. glumes glabrous). Upper lemma split for > 2/3 its length (vs. split < 1/2 its length). Awn > 15 mm (vs. 8-15 mm in S. scoparium).
