Recognition: Marsh and ditch grass. Sheath can be hairy in var. bartowiense. Leaves flat (vs. folded in P. repens). Inflorescence branches scabrous, often delicate and uncrowded. Spikelets 2-3 mm, often around 2.5 mm. Lower glume truncate (as in P. repens) and very short.
