Recognition: Large, coarse grass with dense awn-bearing inflorescence. The sheaths hispid, at least toward base with papilla-based hairs. Awns 10-25 mm. (E. crus-galli usually has the lower sheaths glabrous or with soft hairs, inflorescences not dense, awns 0-50 mm.) Other species have glabrous sheaths.
