Natural range:  Southern U.S. to South America

Habitat:  Sandy pinewoods

Recognition:  Spikelets large (4-18 mm long X 1.4–3 mm wide).  Dehiscence basipetal.   Florets 8-15, 5-12 mm long.  Lower glume 1.1-3.4 mm, upper glume 1.6-3.4 mm long.  Lemmas with conspicuous green lateral veins.  E. scaligera has similar spikelets but the inflorescence is much smaller.
